We are very pleased to invite everybody, who is interested, to participate in a workshop on "Freshwater Invertebrates of Southeast Asia: Biodiversity and Origin”, which will be held in Taksila Hotel (Maha Sarakham province) in the Northeast of Thailand from July 30th -August 4th, 2012.
The meeting will be part of a series of events sponsored by the EC
program Southeast Asian – European Year of Science and Technology 2012.
Our
goals are twofold. In the oral and poster presentations we would like
to provide an arena for presentation of the latest research relating
to the diversity of fauna, and discuss the
phylogeny-based zoogeographic patterns in a wide array of freshwater
taxa, to get a better understanding of the history of the freshwater
fauna in Southeast Asia. The topics that will be covered are:
fauna inventories, morphology and barcoding; historical biogeography;
ancient lakes in Southeast Asia: the uniqueness and threats to their
fauna; pests, alien and invasive species. We also hope to
develop a good introduction to the geological and climatic
evolution of SEA. The other, and just as important, goal of this
workshop is to attract young scientists (from Southeast Asia in
particular) to do more research on the freshwater invertebrates of SEA.
Therefore, after the morning lectures we would like to organize
afternoon sessions, where students may have an opportunity
to show their material to more experienced professionals and
try to identify the zoological specimens (or just to have a good talk!).
This
initiative is new, we will have to learn a lot and change a few
things while doing our job. Your comments and suggestions on the program
will be very helpful to us.
